    • How has trade influenced what we know as ethnic cuisines?

Ethnic cuisines evolve over time. How has trade shaped the interesting cuisines of the world--Ethiopian, Vietnamese, etc.?

        • How direct is the correlation between a country's economic prosperity and diversity of cuisine that's available in it?

Is there any measure for diversity of cuisine within a country, and if so, how direct is the correlation between a country's economic prosperity and diversity of cuisine that's available in it? (This is quite unscientific, but at a local level — the vast majority all of the truly global economic powerhouse cities I've visited seem to have magnificently diverse and inexpensive food options.)

          • Do the poor pay more for food?

Is food more expensive in poor neighborhood? (Everywhere?) Examples of economically efficient responses from poor consumers, please.

                • A hypothesis: Areas of high ethnic diversity evolve better cuisine.

All the immigrants bring their cuisine and leave the lousy items home. With restaurants and food service often being a "buy yourself a job" type business where only a few of the staff have to be English fluent, large numbers are created and the competition keeps the prices down and the quality up. Their big opportunity for a breakout business becomes appealing to the masses and then you see everything from Pho' to shawarma.

This phenomena is invisible in all the immigrant discussions, but it is one of the better byproducts of diversity.

                  • Will large scale farming by foreign corporations improve the capacity of African countries to feed themselves?

The agricultural sector in most Sub-Saharan countries is inefficient by international standards, dominated by small scale farmers that lack capital to invest in equipment, fertilizers, pest control and high quality seed. Foreign companies have purchased large tracts of land in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and other countries where they have invested in large scale production of sugar and other crops, much of that for export. Should Sub-Saharan governments welcome this kind of investment? If not, how can they improve the productivity of traditional farmers?

                            • How important are corn futures to corn growers? Do they really use these to make production decisions?

The corn you grow today won't be ready to sell for months down the road, so current spot prices may not give you a good idea for what your product will sell for. Do corn growers actually use prices on the future's market to solve this problem? If so, how well does this system work?

                                  • The Green Revolution industrialized/commoditized food. Are calls to rectify some effects likely to be long-term, widespread?

Chipotle, Panera, Wholefoods. Fed up, Supersize Me, Forks over Knives. Fat, Sugar, Salt by Michael Moss. Widespread obesity and smaller discussions of allergies, asthma, and ADHD. These can be seen as signs of an emergent view of food relative to the dominant view which is happy to fill a grocery cart with cheap and tasty foods. What would tell us this is not a wealthy person's subculture but rather the early signs of a broader call to restore the food supply?

                                        • Japan's lost decade

Japan, currently the third largest economy in the world, has experienced meager economic growth over the past 15 or so years, despite (or because?) using many tools advocated by certain economic schools ranging from deficit spending, record-low interest rates and so forth.
Why is economic growth in Japan so low?
What is the regulatory environment businesses have to operate within in Japan vs. say the US?
What are the real (as opposed to intended) consequences and incentives of government actions (and inaction)?
