Is food more expensive in poor neighborhood? (Everywhere?) Examples of economically efficient responses from poor consumers, please.

        • Will large scale farming by foreign corporations improve the capacity of African countries to feed themselves?

The agricultural sector in most Sub-Saharan countries is inefficient by international standards, dominated by small scale farmers that lack capital to invest in equipment, fertilizers, pest control and high quality seed. Foreign companies have purchased large tracts of land in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and other countries where they have invested in large scale production of sugar and other crops, much of that for export. Should Sub-Saharan governments welcome this kind of investment? If not, how can they improve the productivity of traditional farmers?

          • How do protectionist agriculture policies impact the food economy?

This could be a companion video to subsidies wherein you discuss quotas and industry led policies (regulatory capture) that are designed to protect certain industries or regions from competition. Perhaps discuss how certain policies or regulations prevent local farms from competing or home agriculture. Many places have regulations preventing the keeping of chickens or bees or growing food. The SCOTUS case Wickard v. Philburn is relevant here as well. This also is related to tariffs and trade embargoes. Cuban sugar, etc. Lots of potential material here.

Discuss agriculture subsidies and how subsidies (or intervention more broadly) lead to inefficient markets and even food shortages. Brief history and reason behind agriculture subsidies in the US.

                    • How could China privatize its industries without experiencing the cronyism Russia developed in the 1990s?

Russia embraced "shock therapy" in market liberalism in the 1990s, but critics argue that rather than foster economic entrepreneurship, it simply continued cronyism with allies of political leaders receiving the rents from privatization of different industries. It is argued that these "oligarchs," unlike entrepreneurs, frequently lack the skill sets needed to operate firms in an economically productive manner. As such, this institutional arrangement of top-down creation of firms through a central authority rather than an organic creation of firms through entrepreneurs has brought about a severely hampered economy with massive corruption and inefficiencies. If China's recent struggles is indicative that…

                        • How direct is the correlation between a country's economic prosperity and diversity of cuisine that's available in it?

Is there any measure for diversity of cuisine within a country, and if so, how direct is the correlation between a country's economic prosperity and diversity of cuisine that's available in it? (This is quite unscientific, but at a local level — the vast majority all of the truly global economic powerhouse cities I've visited seem to have magnificently diverse and inexpensive food options.)

                                  • A hypothesis: Areas of high ethnic diversity evolve better cuisine.

All the immigrants bring their cuisine and leave the lousy items home. With restaurants and food service often being a "buy yourself a job" type business where only a few of the staff have to be English fluent, large numbers are created and the competition keeps the prices down and the quality up. Their big opportunity for a breakout business becomes appealing to the masses and then you see everything from Pho' to shawarma.

This phenomena is invisible in all the immigrant discussions, but it is one of the better byproducts of diversity.
